Anthropology and Environment Bibliography

Journals Special Issues Books

This bibliography has about 3800 items in it, mostly collected from 2002 to early 2008 on the EANTH-L listserve (www.eanth.org), gleaned from syllabi on the eanth site, and a few things I've added over the years. I have tried to verify and correct them all against sources of bibliographic information on the internet, primarily library and journal web sites.

Internet sources that I found particularly useful for this purpose were:

For journal articles, I liked:

  • journalseek.net: very useful for finding journal web sites.
  • AnthroSource: www.anthrosource.net
  • JSTOR (accessed via my local research library).
  • EBSCO and Academic Search Complete (accessed via my local city library), good for citations and often pdfs of many articles nobody else knew anything about.

Several syllabi have been added (mostly) to this list. Although it was started as a personal reading list, it got too big for that. The closest I have come to a list of "must reads" in the field is near the top of Rajindra Puri's SE831 course; about 60 books (Google it).

The Special Issues section is composed of any journals in which anyone has pointed out a special issue to me, combined with the journals that we evidently use the most (Human Ecology wins that). I then went through most of the journals that I could get my hands or eyes on and, usually working backwards from the present, added all the special issues that I thought someone around here might be interested in, albeit not necessarily always in a positive sense. The special issues give a sense of what goes on in a journal, and if you read them right, they kind of show a history.

The greatest weakness of this list is that it is a flat list, ordered simply by author and year, each item systematically stripped of context and place in a larger scheme. (I wanted, early on, to avoid duplicate entries.) There is no completeness to it. Most edited volumes are accompanied here by only one (maybe two) references to the articles inside. A dream that would take a lot of funding, and/or cooperative work from a lot of people, would be to create encompassing categorical schemata, and place each item (and parts of items) into each applicable node of those schemata. Each schema would have the form of a tree. Our documents could be made to talk to each other that way, and I think the consequences for the field would be profound. People would be able to see and theorize the parts in the whole, to structure that whole, and to read everything in their bailiwicks. Really, it should be done for all of anthropology, though.

Don't forget, you can do searches in the document using Ctrl-F (in Internet Explorer, anyway).

If anyone has any comments, corrections or additions just send them to Joe (at) SheadProgramming.com. Likewise, email me for the xml version. If you have difficulty with the presentation, or font used, you can try adjusting the stylesheet embedded at the top of the html document, using a plain-text editor. Let me know if you need to do that, I'm curious.

Details: I tended to expand abbreviated author names to avoid collisions; e.g., Mara Goldman and Michael Goldman both reduce to "M. Goldman." For alphabetical ordering of authors, I tried to follow The Chicago Manual of Style. Surnames that are preceded by prepositions (de, van, etc.) are handled according to common usage, and the author's desire; sometimes the preposition is the start of the surname, sometimes it isn't. At least this is what I tried to do, but I couldn't always find reliable information on it.

For articles in edited volumes, the reference to the edited volume is in short form, but the full citation for the volume is also included in the bibliography.

For the publication year, I found the date of original publication most significant. Where multiple publishers printed the same book in the same year, one was selected at random. If the year is given in the form 8888(9999) then the publisher corresponds to the second year. Rarely is a book's edition mentioned, so this bibliography should not be considered a recommendation of one edition over another.

For articles in edited volumes, the Berkeley library catalog often had tables of contents. If this agreed with what I had, then I considered it good enough, and marked it verified (the verification process was imperfect). At last resort, when I couldn't find seemingly reliable information on the internet, I would be forced to actually touch a material copy, in the UT libraries. If they didn't have it (or it is permanently checked out), then the citation is marked "(unverified)". Some edited volumes are marked verified, while the items in them are marked unverified, owing to the availability of catalog information but no physical copy.
